2018 AWARD

The Jennifer Davis Award for Fostering Creative Community was awarded to Kyle Jozsa than on March 30, 2018.

From JD: Kyle Jozsa’s passion for facilitating creative and expressive educational experiences inspires and motivates me to be a better educator. I’m in awe of his ability to captivate and engage audiences of all ages. Kyle’s storytelling paints pictures using spoken word and he weaves tales that are rich and delightfully delicious to hear. I am thrilled and honored and tickled pink to present the Jennifer Davis Award for Fostering Creative Community to one of this community’s most talented storytellers, an amazing educator, and Wandering Aesthetics’s “Top Dog”, Kyle Jozsa.

Fun Fact : Kyle also  has made skills making balloon animals!

Drawing on a work ethic derived from his path to Eagle Scout, Kyle Jozsa co-founded the storytelling theatre company, Wandering Aesthetics in 2013 with his partner in work and life, Benjamin Rexroad. Kyle serves as Wandering Aesthetics’ Artistic Director, Director of Education and primary Storyteller. As such, Kyle is charged with collecting stories from the heart of Appalachia to the shores of the Cuyahoga, creating dynamic storytelling performances and inspiring students of all ages to find their voices and tell their own tales. Kyle’s theatrical training includes an intensive summer program at Double Edge Theatre in Asheville, MA, multiple workshops with Akron’s own New World Performance Laboratory and extensive work with Director Benjamin Rexroad. Following his hike of the 2,186-mile Appalachian Trail, Kyle made the transition to solo performer. Most recently Kyle was named the 2016 Akron Arts Alive! Award Winner for Outstanding Artist in Theater.

Through all of these changes, Kyle has remained dedicated to his personal training and the study of the actor’s (and storyteller’s) craft.

2017 Award

The Jennifer Davis Award for Fostering Creative Community was inaugurally awarded to none other than Ms. Jennifer Davis on March 3, 2017.

The award carries a $250 cash prize, which was funded by generous donations from Jennifer’s fans as well as a portion of each ticket sold to Crafty Mart's Beach Party Fundraiser.

The leftover funds will be used to sustain the award as an annual honor given to a person that embodies Davis’s sparkly spirit and builds community through creativity. If you would like to make a contribution to that award you can do so here!

Davis runs smARTStudio Akron out of her home in Highland Square.

Jennifer, who was surprised with the honor, was awarded (by her own daughter!) a handmade plaque-- assembled by Crafty Mart team member Marissa and hand-stamped with the words "Happy HeART" by Alexander of the Exquiste Corpse Boutique-- and a custom unicorn David Bowie robot by the Robot Consortium.

Jennifer is well-known for her pop culture painting parties (including the likes of Bill Murray and David Bowie),  her creative programs at the Akron Art Museum, and as a founding member of the Akron Craft + Social Club which hosts monthly creative activities while raising funds for charitable causes.

Not only does she strive to help her students in ability, but her focus on process over product has had a therapeutic effect on hundreds of Akronites.
