You may have noticed that Crafty Mart is growing by leaps and bounds. One of the growth opportunities we're most excited about is extending our efforts to help nurture and develop our local maker community. That's what the MAKER SESSIONS are all about. With the assistance of the Burton D. Morgan Foundation, we have put together a series of five classes designed specifically for artists and makers to address some of your business needs. Want to know how to better turn your efforts into a sustainable income? This is for you.

The first Maker Session is this Wednesday, May 25th, 6-9pm at The Bit Factory (5th Floor of the Akron Global Business Accelerator at 526 S. Main Street, Akron). This first session is about Intellectual Property rights. Our guest speaker will be Gregory D. Fernengel, R.Ph. Attorney At Law. He will be discussing the nuances of IP Protection, such as design patents, trademarks and copyright.  Don’t miss this critical session, it could prove to be the ounce of prevention to prevent the need for a pound of cure.

How much do you know about IP (or Intellectual Property) and your rights? Many artists and makers are not aware that they own intellectual property. They assume that large corporations with profitable names, logos and brands to protect are the only ones who have a need to safeguard their intangible assets. But anything that is written, visually created, and unique to an individual is intellectual property. This means that millions of individuals own more than they believe.

Intellectual property covers many different areas, from logos and corporate identity to products, services and processes that differentiate your business. It’s when these ideas are used without permission that an organization can suffer. Almost all businesses have undoubtedly benefited from the Internet where products, services, and marketing can reach vast audiences at relatively low costs. However, this has also increased the chances of intellectual property theft. Companies of all sizes are at risk of having their unique ideas, products, and services infringed upon, even if they are on the other side of the world, making intellectual property protection more important than ever.

When you have a great idea for a product or service, there will be people who'll want to duplicate your success and sell your ideas as their own. Depending on individual circumstances, you can use patents, trademarks or copyrights – all of which cover different areas of intellectual property. These can be used to prevent competitors or anyone else from using your ideas for their own profit without your consent. IP protection applies to businesses of all sizes. Want to know more? Come to our Maker Session next Wed. May 25th.

Tickets to the Maker Sessions are $20 each. Click here to purchase your ticket from Eventbrite. What do you get for your money and attendance? There will be a knowledgeable presentation followed by a Q&A discussion, food catered by Mustard Seed Café, a cash bar featuring Thirsty Dog beer, and networking opportunities with fellow artists and makers.
