We're getting prepared for the upcoming Mom & Pop Shoppe--Crafty Mart's large, annual Spring Show. We're eager to bring you a series of profiles to introduce you to a few of our makers coming to the Mom & Pop Shoppe on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016. This is just one in a series of Vendor Spotlights where we let those who will be sharing their wares shine a light on what it is they do. The following profile is Lori Dooley from Dooleydipity and her response to a mini-questionnaire.
1). What's your name and what is it that you make?
My name is Lori Dooley and I make functional bags & home goods out of upcycled textiles. I began with felting old sweaters to turn into throws, pillows & seasonal fun stuff. I started working with coffee sacks at the request of a local coffee shop owner & now my coffee sack totes lined with men's shirts are what I spend most of my time with.
2). How did you acquire the unique skill set to do what it is you do?
I love making something new from old, finding creative, unusual ways to use ordinary things. Whether it's turning an old chair into a planter, old door into a table or a sweater into a stocking, I just love the creative process. But textiles are my first love. I began sewing & quilting 25 years ago when my kids were young and I'm completely self taught. I'm not a big pattern person, my right brain tends to take over, so I freestyle until I come up with a design that I'm happy with. Working with upcycled materials like used coffee sacks is a LOT of freestyle, because each one has different graphics placement & imperfections to work around. And using men's shirts for the lining takes some finesse also, but that's what makes it fun!
3). What is your best seller?
The totes like Clean Coffee with the big, bold print and the Royal coffee are a couple of the most popular designs.
4). How long have you been vending? Have you done a Crafty Mart show before?
I've been selling locally for about a year & a half, but Crafty Mart is my first foray into pop up shops or craft shows. February was my first Crafty Mart as a vendor, though I've been a frequent shopper in the past!
5). Chocolate or peanut butter?
Can I say chocolate AND peanut butter... together of course! There's a reason Reese's Peanut Butter Cups have been around so long!
Thank you for answering our questions Lori. And, thanks for coming to the Mom & Pop Shoppe. We'll see everyone on Sat. April 2nd from 10am-4pm at the Akron Art Museum, Summit Artspace, and Akron Main Library. You'll be able to find Dooleydipity at the Library.
