Let us introduce you to one of our many artisans coming to The Mom & Pop Shoppe on Saturday, April 25th. This is the third in a series of Vendor Spotlights where we let those who will be sharing their wares shine a light on what it is they do. The following profile is Burns Boards' response to a mini-questionnaire.
1). What's your name and what is it that you make?
Burns Boards is a husband and wife team that handcrafts high end cutting boards for every kitchen. Our goal is to create cutting boards that will last through the generations. We use only the highest grades of food safe wood glue and organic beeswax to ensure a food friendly finish. Our cutting boards make the perfect gift for weddings, birthdays or just to treat yourself!
2). How did you acquire the unique skill set to do what it is you do?
It started with a table saw.
A few birthdays ago my wife presented me with a table saw. Mind you, not just any table saw. This baby came from a dilapidated shack in a holler of West Virginia. The story of how her family hoisted it out and drove it back to Ohio has checkered many dinner conversations since that birthday, and we still get a good chuckle.
Since then, I've played around and honed my woodworking craft. My workshop has grown to include quite a few more tools than my original table saw. I started making end grain cutting boards a few years ago for family and friends as gifts. The response was pretty nice - and I started getting more and more requests.
A couple of Christmases ago my wife and I thought that maybe, just maybe, we can do something more with this woodworking "thing". She went to school for photography and design, and we started putting our heads together as to how we could make this work. She started photographing my boards and posting them online. They were much nicer than my camera phone pics. We started getting orders.
We are working side-by-side now. After 11 years of marriage, she has started working in the workshop - something I NEVER thought would happen. Between the two of us, we are managing the day-to-day operations of Burns Boards, and watching our small business grow.
3). What is your best seller?
Our best seller has been our 8x12 size. Priced at $45, they make a very affordable and pretty gift.
4). How long have you been vending? Have you done the Mom & Pop Shoppe before?
Our first show was last November at Crafty Mart. We are pretty much newbies to the vending scene! We've met some really awesome folks in our short time as vendors and can't wait to become "regulars."
5). The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?
Krista says Beatles. Bob says Stones.
Many thanks to Bob and Krista for answering our questions and coming to Crafty Mart's Mom & Pop Shoppe. We'll see everyone on Saturday, April 25th, from 10am-5pm at Musica, Akron Art Museum, and Summit Artspace. You'll be able to locate Burns Boards at Musica.
